Why your new years resolution is not about your value

I mentioned in my previous post how we can get caught up in believing that our happiness lies in successfully completing our goals. This can keep us in a trap of believing that we are not good enough or can’t be happier right now.



Sometimes we forget that we create our feelings. For many of us it doesn’t feel like that; we often talk about events or people ‘making us feel’ a certain way. But the reality is that it isn’t what happens to us that matters, but what we make of it.

That’s why one person will laugh and another will take offence at the same statement. It’s why being made redundant causes some to fall into despair and others discover new passions and opportunities. And it’s why the opportunity  to do public speaking causes some to clap their hands in delight and prompts others to run to the hills, screaming.

Own it

Taking total responsibility for our mindset can initially seem daunting. I love a good scapegoat to get me off the hook. Nothing like a good moan about a difficult person to make me feel better about myself. But in time I have realised how much better it is to own how I feel, rather than giving my power away to external events or other people. I love to people please, so this is a hard habit to break, but I continue to be a work in progress.

If you are feeling low, anxious or stressed, consider whether this is a result of the way you are looking at the world or what you believe about yourself. Your self-worth does not reside in the completion or non-completion of a goal.

Why not give yourself some space to switch off from everything around you for just five minutes with your eyes closed. Breathe deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth. Getting quiet can make all the difference in remembering how much you already have and how you can change your perspective. It can then be so much easier to move forward and make the changes you want to make in your life.
